Paolo Leo Negroamaro IGP (Indicazione Geografica Protetta) Salento is made from 100% Negroamaro grapes which is one of the most famous of Puglian grape varieties. Negromaro translates literally as “Black Bitter”. Feudo Paolo Leo can trace its origins back to the turn of the 20th century when Antonio Leo began making wine from grapes grown on his estate named Masseria Monticello. On inheriting the vineyards, Antonio’s grandson, Paolo Leo built his own winery in the small town of San Donaci in Salento and the beginnings of today’s company were born. Today the company is owned by another Paolo Leo, the fifth-generation of the family to do so. In 1985 when Paolo married Roberta d’Arpa he asked guests for gifts of cash, not presents, The 30 million Lira raised enabled him to purchase an additional 6 hectares of land on the outskirts of San Donaci where the modern, state-of stands today (with a capacity of 50,000 hectolitres). The family wine-making philosophy, whilst using modern techniques, is to make wines as naturally as possible on intervening when absolutely necessary. The wine is vinified, unoaked and is aged for 5 months in stainless steel vats and 1 month in bottle prior to release. Paolo Leo Negroamaro is a pure and fruity expression of the Negroamaro grape.
