Glittering pale white gold in the glass with appealing vibrant, floral, lime and spice notes. Succulent and juicy on the palate, candied citrus fruits marry with hints of ginger, vanilla and other heady spices. The 2014 Cordon Cut Riesling has Mount Horrocks‘ trademark minerality and balancing fresh acidity. Here in its naturally concentrated form, the crystal-clear varietal character sings its melodic song. In a word, delicious.
Mount Horrocks Wines is owned by winemaker Stephanie Toole, who restricts production to approximately 4000 cases per annum in order to achieve her aims of quality and single vineyard expression. The Clare Valley winery was established in 1982 and purchased by Stephanie in 1993, who has made significant improvements to the wines, vineyards and winery. Stephanie describes her wines as ‘hand made food wines with an emphasis on structure as well as generous fruit flavours’. All grapes are 100% estate grown and hand picked from three separate vineyard sites (Auburn vineyard for the Cordon Cut, Watervale vineyard for the Riesling, Semillon and Shiraz, and Polish Hill River vineyard for the Cabernet) totalling nearly 10 hectares in the Clare Valley. Each release from Stephanie Toole seems to eclipse the quality standard set by the previous vintage. The Watervale Riesling is a regional classic, and the Cordon Cut Riesling ranks among Australia’s best sweet wines. The Cordon Cut has twice won the Regional Sweet Trophy over £10 in the Decanter World Wine Awards.
